Expanding Your Folk Song Repertoire

Shay Black
Music 3 – Rm 219 / 1:00 - 2:00

Are you looking for a great new song that people can join in the chorus, one that will make you feel confident and sound good? Maybe you know someone who has a good voice, but little confidence?Shay teaches many different Irish, Scottish, English and other traditional songs, ranging from the humble come-all-ye to the big ballad to the folk anthem. His teaching style is through learning by repetition, so no background knowledge of music theory is necessary. Starting from “If you can hum it, you can sing it”, he ploughs through songs in a call-and-response fashion. This class is not for listeners; you will be singing all through this class in a group setting, so don’t be scared. This workshop is a taster for the Repertoire class Shay teaches at The Freight and Salvage on Monday nights at 8:30 p.m.
For that Monday class, songs are recorded and then posted on The Freight website, along with lyrics, the day after the class. If you like, you can bring your own recording device, but Shay will provide the lyrics … lots of them! And you don’t need to attend every class. Songs from the previous week are reviewed at every class, and you also can access both song melody and lyrics from the Freight website at any time. And of course you can bring your own recording device to help memorize melody.
