This workshop is for beginners or those who want to refresh their spoons skills. I teach the basic beat with the goal of having everyone be able to play along with a couple of tunes by the end of the workshop. Music is provided by my husband on harmonica. I also show how to play some of the fancier spoon moves that require future practice. Bring a set of spoons to the session, either wood or metal. Kitchen soup or tablespoons work fine. Try to find a set with as flat a handle as possible and not too curved of a bowl. But we’ll work with whatever you have.
I’ve been playing old timey music since the late 1970s. I play banjo, guitar, bass, piano and spoons. I had an all-woman string band , “Old Mother Logo,” made 2 albums and played mostly West Coast theme parks (like Disney, Knotts Berry Farm), blue grass festivals, and house concerts. I retired the band in 1987 but have continued playing for fun and casual performances. Because hardly anyone teaches them, I have given dozens of spoons workshops at festivals and music events (even on Zoom) and have won first place in any competition I entered in the “other or novelty” instrument category. Spoons are so much fun, and I love to teach people how to play them.
