Call & Response Song Circle (2022 program)

The Sillertides (Doug Huggins and Linn Phipps)
Music 3 / 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Real-time event on festival day with pre-registration required. You can find the registration link near the top of the program page when the link is ready.

The Sillertides are Linn Phipps and Doug Huggins. They co-sing live over Zoom every week and have led workshops and song circles at a number of virtual USA folk festivals. Their trademark is live Zoom singing of call and response / conversation songs – 5000 miles apart.

Here, the theme will be call & response shanties and sea songs.  This song circle will be open to all singers accompanied or unaccompanied, and musicians. Bring your own song on this theme. Everyone will have a chance to participate and share their song. Please feel free to sing the calls and responses yourself – or find a friend and sing together in person or over Zoom!

Linn Phipps is a UK based traditional singer in English and Gaelic. She has hugely enjoyed using Zoom for transatlantic sings and workshops, and meeting friends old and new. She sings as a soloist, as one half of the transatlantic duo The Sillertides, with musician friends, in a folk group, and with two Gaelic choirs; and at ceilidhs in Scotland and the North of England. She has also sung competitively, gaining the Royal National Mòd’s Silver Pendant, the first-prize medal for learners of Gaelic. During the Covid lockdown period, she has successfully hosted regular zoom singarounds in both languages with worldwide participation, and has herself participated in about over 1000 regular zoom sings with the USA, Ireland, France, and Australia as well as the UK. She has led song circles, sessions, and approximately 30 learn-song workshops, especially at USA folk festivals, with great feedback. She hosts a free monthly zoom learn-song workshop, as well as a monthly zoom Gaelic ceilidh. Currently she is co-hosting a series of shanty big sings.
