Join Duygu to add a Turkish song to your repertoire. The class will start with a short introduction to the sounds of Turkish letters so that you can follow the printed/digital lyrics. Turkish is a phonetic language and has a Latin-script alphabet. Time permitting, workshop participants will learn one or two songs. This is a participatory workshop. Duygu will accompany the songs with her guitar. Participants are welcome to bring their instruments to play along, but there won’t be any instrumental instruction.
With a desire to explore cultures and traditions worldwide, Duygu Gün set out on the road in 2006 from Turkey, and lived in Italy, the UK, Germany, the US, and Brazil before moving to San Francisco in 2012. Through these travels, she came to value the power of arts and culture to connect diverse communities and dedicated herself to making it possible for artists to create and for audiences to access it. Musically, she is drawn to shared folk music repertoire and music that travels around as the populations move. Duygu has been performing since 1997 in various bands, and has performed in London, Istanbul, San Francisco Bay Area, and Northern California.
Since 2020, she has performed around the Bay Area with her accordion-guitar duo Nakarat on vocals and guitar. Nakarat’s music is a vibrant, emotional mélange of Mediterranean folk songs in Turkish, Ladino, Greek, Griko, and Italian.
