In this participatory workshop, historian Estelle Freedman will lead, teach, and explain what folk songs reveal of the history of women’s lives in the United States from the late eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Learn the meanings behind some familiar — and some not so familiar — songs sung by or about women in the past, as you sing along.
Estelle Freedman, a member of the SF Folk Music Club since 1988 and a Stanford historian for even longer, has written and taught about women, sexuality, and feminism, and about social movements and song. She is co-directing the forthcoming film “Singing for Justice,” about the life and times of Faith Petric.
