Bring old traditional songs and ballads showing how people fought back throughout history. Your ancestors made it through, and grew stronger, and so will you!
In times like these it’s important not to give up. That’s why this workshop will focus on old traditional songs in which people fought for what they believed in, pushed back against unfairness and oppression, and stood up for themselves. This workshop is aimed at songs that have been passed down through oral tradition, not contemporary songs. Acoustic instruments are welcome.
Casey learned her first traditional ballad at age 7, and has a life-long interest in the folklore and history that underlie old songs — not only in English but in other European languages. She’s led numerous workshops over the years, related to traditional songs and ballads, for the SFFMC and the Portland Folk Music Society. Casey’s column, Trad Lore, has covered topics like herb lore, the supernatural, and humor in traditional song, and is published in the Folknik and Local Lore newsletters.
